Zabadani Skirt

This skirt is named after Zabadani, a mountain town northwest of Damascus near the Lebanese border. Before the war, Zabadani was known for its apple orchards, vineyards, cold springs, and summer guesthouses. Families from across Syria traveled there to escape the heat, walking through shaded gardens and quiet streets lined with fruit trees. It was a place associated with rest, fresh air, and open space.

During the war, Zabadani came under a long siege. Supply routes were cut off, and access to food, fuel, and medicine became extremely limited. Movement within the town grew dangerous under shelling and sniper lines. Residents survived through rationing, shared kitchens, and private networks of care. Evacuation agreements shifted repeatedly, and families lived with long stretches of uncertainty - not knowing whether they would remain, leave, or return.

When the siege ended, those who came back found homes partially collapsed, walls marked by fire, and gardens overgrown. Many orchards were damaged but not entirely lost. Rebuilding began slowly. People cleared rooms one at a time, repaired windows, restored irrigation, and grafted trees back to life. This skirt reflects that kind of return: patient reconstruction after disruption.
