The Sykes–Picot Agreement was a secret 1916 treaty between the United Kingdom and France, with backing from Russia and Italy. It defined their mutually agreed spheres of influence and control in the Middle East in the event they successfully defeated the Ottoman Empire during World War I.
The key components of the agreement included the following:
French Sphere of Influence: France was granted control over the Modern day Syria and Lebanon.
British Sphere of Influence: Britain was allocated direct and indirect control over modern day Palestine and Jordan.
