Homs

Homs sits in central-western Syria and became one of the first major centers of the uprising. Homs has long been a central link between Damascus, Hama, Aleppo, and the Syrian coast. Trade routes, travel routes, and social networks run through it, which is part of why its uprising and siege mattered nationally - what happened there affected the entire country. Neighborhoods such as Baba Amr and Old Homs faced prolonged shelling and blockade. Many families were displaced, and everyday life shifted from public institutions to community-organized survival.

People built underground kitchens, shared food from house to house, converted homes into makeshift clinics, and taught children in basements when schools could no longer operate. The city is remembered for how ordinary residents created systems of care when official support disappeared.
